Described by poet Dylan Thomas as “the loveliest village in England,” Mousehole (pronounced “Mowzel”) retains all the character of a traditional Cornish fishing village despite being just a short drive from Penzance and Tregenza. Its sheltered harbour, protected by two sturdy sea walls, once bustled with hundreds of pilchard fishing boats but now provides a tranquil haven for local fishermen and visiting yachts.
Winding streets lined with granite cottages lead from the picturesque harbour, where you’ll find art galleries, craft shops and quality seafood restaurants. The Ship Inn, dating from the 14th century, offers traditional Cornish ales and hearty meals. Visit during December to experience the famous Mousehole Christmas lights, when the entire village and harbour are transformed with illuminated displays that draw thousands of visitors annually. Don’t miss sampling Stargazy Pie, a local delicacy traditionally eaten during Tom Bawcock’s Eve celebrations on December 23rd, commemorating a historic rescue from famine. For spectacular coastal views, follow the South West Coast Path towards Lamorna Cove.
